Analysis on Child Protection Policy (DepEd Order No. 40, s. 2012)

DepEd Order No. 40, s. 2012 or DepEd Child Protection policy constitutes the policy and guidelines on protecting children in school from abuse, violence, exploitation, discrimination, bullying, and other forms of abuse. Among its bases are the Philippine 1987 Constitution (Article XV, Section 3 [2]; Article XIV, Section 3 [2]), the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), and the Family Code of the Philippines.             As stipulated further in the Order, the Department recognizes that cases of abuse may arise as a result of the difficult situations faced by teachers and other officials within and outside the school. DepEd has adopted the policy to provide special protection to children who are gravely threatened or endangered by circumstances which affect their normal development and over which they have no control, and to assist the concerned agencies in their rehabilitation. Furthermore, the Department aims to ensure such special protection from all forms of

Ecological Check, Mother Earth is Deteriorating: Educators’ Role in Environmental Education

As we witnessed the rapid innovation of our time, man’s activities toward technological advancement and industrialization threaten the earth’s capacity to sustain mankind. In the advent of technology and fast-pacing human pursuit for development, the earth is facing its fastest deterioration to date which also calls for a bit of concern today. As humans, we always find ways to ease our way of living by using the bountiful natural resources around us which also signals our never-ending abuse and the exploitation of the ecology. Hence, ecological destruction becomes inevitable for mankind as the abuse of Mother Nature has been practicing by humans since time immemorial. Though such abuse has been justified by man’s satisfaction of needs for survival, the act of destroying our sole source of life and living is ecologically immoral. For the past decades, the earth has been experiencing the drastic changes in its extremities caused by global warming which is now threatening climat

Teacher’s Philosophy of Education

Teacher’s philosophy of teaching and of education, in general, should be anchored on that of the state and the institution where s/he serves. Aside from that, this philosophy must follow the accepted standards and norms of the society where s/he is part of. This philosophy must transcend the ideals of becoming and living as a moral, resilient, productive, upright, and responsible individual.

Qualities of a Good Teacher

If I would be given a chance to select my own teacher, my qualifications would be the following: Has license. My teachers should have passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). This is an assurance that their delivery of education is of standard and in line the parameters set by the Philippine educational system. Has ample experience in teaching, whether in private or other educational institutions. My teachers should have at least experience in teaching and handling students. I believe that experience is truly a good teacher. The more experienced and seasoned my teachers are, the more quality and superb instruction will be delivered to my students. Has enough training in teaching, especially in handling classes and students’ behavior. My teachers should have at least relevant trainings from the seminar, workshops, symposia, forums, and others to assure that they had gained enough preparation before teaching and handling classes, especially students’ behavior. I beli

Professionalization and the Nobility of Teaching: The Need for Humanized Education

How noble is the teaching profession? It’s the noblest of all! Indeed, teaching is one of the highly regarded and respected professions in the world due to its integrity and dignity as a profession for humanity. In the Philippines, one of the first steps undertaken to elevate the nobility of teaching as a profession is the Republic Act 7836 (Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994) that has been enacted primarily to strengthen the regulation and supervision of the practice of teaching in the Philippines and prescribing a licensure examination for teachers. Thus, it is also called the LET Law. Therefore, in becoming professional, teachers need to have exceptional teaching skills and license to be called the professional teacher. As professionals, teachers mold someone’s life in the context of educating humans in conformity with the norms and standards set by society. They are entrusted to prepare the students for life and for work. Thus, it is a prerequisite for every t

Roar of Thy Soul: Memoir of a Hero

Ryan R. Pecson, MAEd (The Official Oration for Cluster III Oration Contest, Division of Pampanga) Consummatum est! It is done, but the glory of his name continues to live on…. One and a half centuries have passed and the memory of the man still lingers and transcends through generations of young and old alike. His name is Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal y Alonzo de Realonda – a multi-faceted and splendid hero: martyr, genius, physician, and the like. As the skirmishes of political turmoil and civil disobedience tarnish the country’s stability today and plunder the innocence of our beliefs, the memory of that man, how he struggles to liberate this land from the bondage of tyranny is worth remembering. A liberator as we may speak! As it has been said, a man’s greatness is reflected by his masterpieces. As his trail leaves a mark to his followers, the peculiarity of his ideals roars even to those blistered and shattered folks. His writings mirrored our centuries of infamy to c

Positive Discipline + Positive Attitude = Successful Teaching

As teachers, we want to be the best for our students. Through the years of my teaching experience, I’ve been wondering about the ingredients that are needed in order for me to be the great teacher that I want to be. As always mentioned, a teacher: needs to have mastery of the subject matter; establishes rapport with the students; has good classroom management skills; has a sense of humor; and the like. If we want our students to explicit good behavior, we need to be good on them. This idea coincides to the sayings “Love begets love” and “Do good unto others if you want them to do good unto you.” If the students are disciplined positively, with no prejudices and biases, goodness in them prevails no matter what wildness they have inside. Sometimes students misbehaved due to the way we approach and treat them. If we want to enforce good discipline practices, instilling responsibility with the sense of accountability. As Kerrigan (2013) explained, for students to have a successful yea

Art of Letting Go: The Fun and Pain of Classroom Advising

Being an adviser, at times taxing, tedious, and stressing. Aside from the challenges advising brings, being connected to your students and sharing the hardships and fruits of education with them are truly fulfilling. As a classroom teacher, we experienced to be their second parent, friend, buddy, role model, and protector. It's an experience that is incomparable and unmatched.   For a year and two months, I enjoyed the opportunity of being a parent and a friend. Those students that I handled brought the best in me. Though at times, they are causing troubles and mishaps, such petty things are just a natural part of the profession we are into. Apart from those negative things, advising makes us stronger and develop us as professional teachers. The emotional attachment and bonding that we had with those students make us humane and caring beings. That is why being apart to those students whom you cherished and treated as your own children are the most heart-aching thing that an a

Anger Management for Teachers

My conscience is crippling me right now. It's hard when you utter words toward students that you should have not said and you are only saying such as to reprimand them anyway. Anger sometimes makes you look and feel evil. That is why when it occurs and happens unintentionally, it really strikes hard. Though this should not be the last resort for the teacher, at times, we are saying harsh words to students as a way of disciplining them and signaling the weight of their misbehavior in the class. For some teachers, this method is quite working, but I do not adhere to it personally. No matter how good your intentions are as a teacher, the means should always be good and just even for those unruly students. As what Machiavelli apprehended “mean justifies the end." As a novice teacher, I admit that my patience is quite shorter as compared to those seasoned ones. But I'm not trying to make this as an excuse though. I know I’m a newbie in this field and I want to fill what

Localization and Contextualization in Teaching K-12 Social Studies

One of the key features of the K-12 Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan) curriculum is the delivery of lessons through localization and contextualization. The principle of localization and contextualization is not new to DepEd teachers for it is already  embedded  in our mission which states “To protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality, equitable, culture-based , and complete basic education…” Also, the concept of localization and contextualization is being stipulated in the provisions of our 1987 Philippine Constitution particularly on Article XIV, Section 14 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution which states that “The State shall foster the preservation, enrichment, and dynamic evolution of a Filipino national culture based on the principle of unity in diversity in a climate of free artistic and intellectual expression” and Article XIV, Section 5. (1), which states that “The State shall take into account regional and sectoral needs and conditions and shall encourage
