Qualities of a Good Teacher

If I would be given a chance to select my own teacher, my qualifications would be the following:

Has license. My teachers should have passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET). This is an assurance that their delivery of education is of standard and in line the parameters set by the Philippine educational system.

Has ample experience in teaching, whether in private or other educational institutions. My teachers should have at least experience in teaching and handling students. I believe that experience is truly a good teacher. The more experienced and seasoned my teachers are, the more quality and superb instruction will be delivered to my students.

Has enough training in teaching, especially in handling classes and students’ behavior. My teachers should have at least relevant trainings from the seminar, workshops, symposia, forums, and others to assure that they had gained enough preparation before teaching and handling classes, especially students’ behavior. I believe that such professional growth and development endeavors are good avenues for teachers to grow holistically as effective teacher-facilitator. Students’ behaviors nowadays are quite challenging, needing to more experienced teachers to be hired as their mentors.

Has good communication skills or has fluency in the use of either or both Filipino and English. My teachers should be a good communicator either in Filipino or English. As paragons of learnings and virtue, teachers need to have established first their capacity to convey information, message, ideas, ideals, and the like to students. This also helps in boosting students’ inclination to learning.

Has a mastery of the subject matter he/she will be teaching. My teachers should possess mastery of their subject matter. Being able to deliver their lessons well is a key indicator that teachers are good at teaching and had mastered every aspect of their teaching. This could serve as an assurance that teachers are doing their job as imparters of knowledge and giving the quality and relevant education that is needed by today’s 21st-century generations of learners.

Has a good sense of humor. My teachers should be advocates of happy, enthusiastic, active, and participative learning, where all stakeholders of education are doing their roles satisfactorily and meaningfully. Being happy teachers also set the moods of or students and increased their inclination to learning. My teachers should have to use their humor in motivating students to learn and mingle with the rest of the group.

Has the art and passion for teaching students empathy, good citizenry, and discipline. My teachers should have the primary concern of molding students as upright citizens upholding the values, etiquette, and disciple needed in our society they should be imbued with respect and command that is followed by the students.
