Teaching during Emergencies: Preparation for Teaching in the New Normal in Education

No one saw the drastic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic in today's education. Everyone is caught unprepared. Even teachers are at the toughest challenge of their careers yet.

In times of emergencies, education shall thrive and continue. As a social capital, education needs to engage and capacitate every stakeholder to work hand-in-hand to assure learners' right to learning and success despite the continuous challenges in today's society. Though teachers are mandated to provide holistic and responsive instruction to the learners, educating a child is not their sole responsible perse. Everyone in the community has the responsibility of rearing a child to become competitive, humane, and proactive in society. In times like this current Coronavirus pandemic, collaboration among education's stakeholders is a key for the continuity of quality education.

Now, more than ever, teachers need to be adept and be transformed with the trends to strengthen the delivery of quality and responsive education during emergencies or crises. Though safety is the most concern during such situations, providing opportunities for quality education also helps to equip and empower learners during such difficult times. This is where the role of teachers play an integral part. So, what are the things that teachers need to be prepared for in delivering education in the new normal?

1. Preferred learning modalities of the learners, e.g., modular, online, blended, etc.

2. Profiling of learners according to their abilities and instructional needs

3. Technological advancements in the teaching-learning process and their applicability in educational contexts

4. Learning resources appropriate for diverse learners

5. Teaching-learning management approaches and strategies

6. Monitoring of learning progress through continuous feedback and tutoring/coaching

7. Appropriate assessment and evaluation tools and strategies

8. Behavioral management strategies

9. Research and innovation in instruction

10. Mutual teacher-learner relationship

Education during emergencies shall impact the lives of the learners and make them feel integrated into the process of becoming independent learners. Though the task is laborious, teachers are expected to be flexible and equip to diversify and revolutionize instruction even at times of uncertainties. The Coronavirus is here to stay in the meantime, but it does not mean education will become stagnant. What needs to be done is to cautiously and creatively deliver instruction amid the pandemic.
