Student teaching is a program before graduation in which student teachers are expected to apply what they have learned from their courses to actual teaching experience. In basic education, it is an opportunity for teachers serving as cooperating teachers (CTs) to mentor and prepare student teachers (STs) for the world of work as teaching professionals.
Both CTs and STs, as curriculum implementers, are expected to transfer and develop the needed 21st-century skills among learners. Through the in-service training given to student teachers (STs), they gained firsthand experience in applying 21st-century teaching methods demonstrated by their cooperating teachers (CTs). By observing how their CTs develop 21st-century skills in students, these future teachers will likely be able to implement these practices in their classrooms. This preparation will be invaluable when they officially enter teaching (Magno et al., 2016). Indeed, effective collaboration between STs and CTs is essential for delivering high-quality instruction to learners.
STs and CTs gained so much in the process. They can share best practices and insights to tailor instruction based on the learners' needs, develop lesson plans and instructional materials, and provide meaningful assessments. They can also share teaching loads/tasks, thus maximizing their productivity and learners' contact. They can also explore new strategies, tools, and modalities to further develop the students' 21st-century skills.
What is worth celebrating in the internship program is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for STs to be mentored by seasoned and exemplary CTs in public schools. Among other things, public school teachers are exposed to various types of learners and realities that STs may also encounter in the future. These CTs also have experiences and expertise that STs can leverage to improve their teaching competencies. With the humongous tasks of teachers nowadays, collaboration between STs and CTs may revolutionize how instruction is delivered to learners, considering their differences and needs.
